Grace Hopper Celebration

ghcad09One of the great things about working at Intuit is that sometimes, you get an email from a friend at work asking you if you want to go to something awesome for free. I got one such email a couple of months ago, and as a result, I spent Thursday and Friday of last week in Tucson, AZ attending the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, an annual conference where women who work with computers meet to network, learn and collaborate. I met coworkers from Intuit that I’d never met before, as well as fun, smart women from all over the planet who have one thing in common with me – a passion for software and its potential to change the world.

I’m coming back to work excited and recharged. I learned a lot about big-picture trends in technology, and where some of the most influential people in computing think investment and public interest will be in the years to come. I also spent some time reflecting on my own goals and dreams, which is something I don’t really set aside time to do in my day-to-day life. The energy and optimism at the conference stood in stark contrast to the general state of the news today. I was worried about leaving town right before code complete for our next release, but I feel so energized by all the amazing people I met and the cool tech talks I saw, I think I’ll make up for my absence in increased productivity in the weeks to come.

Were any QuickBooks Online users present at this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration? If so, I hope you stopped by our booth and said hello! Next year’s conference is in Atlanta, GA and I hope I’ll get to go again…and maybe meet some of you there?

About me: I write some of the code that makes QuickBooks Online run. In my copious spare time, I’m working on a master’s degree in computer science and trying to train the goofiest rescue mutt in Los Angeles.

Glad to see more women being represented in software. There is a similar problem in the CPA world too, where women are under-represented. Nice going.
